The Certified in Public Health (CPH) exam is administered by the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE). Since 2008, more than 10,000 individuals have passed the CPH exam. The CPH designation demonstrates that an individual has mastered foundational competencies in public health. CPH professionals raise the bar and enhance the public health profession through their exemplary academic and leadership skills.

The CPH exam is offered by live online proctor and at computer based-testing centers all year round.

CPH Exam Eligibility

All candidates must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Students approved by their CEPH-accredited school or program
    OR
  • Alumni who have completed all degree requirements for a graduate-level degree from a CEPH accredited school or program of public health.
    OR
  • Individual with a Bachelor’s degree (any concentration) and a minimum of 5 years of public health work experience(any location).
    OR
  • Individual with a related graduate-level degree, and at least three years’ public health work experience (any location).

Applications will be reviewed based on public health work experience, indicating the scope of foundational knowledge that has been acquired based on the ten essential public health services.

CPH Exam Content

The Certified in Public Health (CPH) exam covers the areas of knowledge relevant to contemporary public health and general principles. The examination was crafted to assess a person’s knowledge of these competencies, regardless of his or her area of expertise.

Evidence-Based Approaches to Public Health (10%), Communication (10%), Leadership (10%), Law and Ethics (10%), Public Health Biology and Human Disease Risk (10%), Collaboration and Partnership (10%), Program Planning and Evaluation (10%), Program Management (10%), Policy in Public Health (10%), Health Equity and Social Justice (10%)
